Today we took the shorter of the two flights, from Dubai to Entebbe. It was really exciting to arrive again in Uganda. I instantly recognized the smell of Uganda…and although it isn’t always the nicest smell, it was ironically a welcoming smell. Almost like a definite affirmation that I was finally back in Uganda.
Right now I am in the hostel that we stayed at last year. It’s a pretty sweet set-up. And really by pretty sweet, I mean comforting and familiar. Tonight will be my first night under a mosquito net…and that will last until the end of July.
We had a little orientation tonight, and our whole group (of 19 teachers!) orientation ended, Amy (Teacher Ex. Director) talked to the 5 of us staying at two different Internally Displaced Persons camps. I am going to be at Pabo IDP with Danielle and Matt M. Danielle went last year as well, and this is Matt’s first year. I’m excited to be spending the majority of the trip with them, and living in the camp.
I also got to meet up with a Ugandan family from Philadelphia. I met a family in Philly, (Paul, Drucilla, and their three daughters- Peace, Joy, and Grace). It was fun to meet up with them here in Uganda, even though we didn't really have much time to spend with one another because we are going up to Gulu in just a short 36 hours.
So far, it sounds like we actually have the nicest set up…which is big news to me. We are going to be staying at a place called “The White House”, and the three of us will each get our own rooms. This is extremely unusual, as I shared my room with 5 other females last year. We have our own cook, and another woman who will do our laundry (by hand) for us. I’m excited to get up to Gulu on Wednesday.
We played Mafia tonight, which brought back some good memories of high school. It was also a good time to get to know one another. Although, since we didn’t really know each other, it was really hard to tell who was lying...which I think made it more fun.
It is getting late, so that's it for now. I'll try to post more in a few days.

Trisha, are you staying at "The White House" every night or just Friday - Sunday? It sounds like you are enjoying welcoming all the familiar sights and sounds. I am glad you went skiing and I can't wait to see the pictures of you inside skiing. Enjoy and be careful. We love you - Mom and Dad
i hope your cook has a good sense of smell :)
if you're staying in the white house does that mean you will have some internet access (or at least running water??)
miss you!
peterak I'm glad to hear that you have had some comforting surprises regarding where you are staying. Be sure to be safe because I hate to think what berta and Erin would make ne do if you weren't there on our next camping trip. Love you!!
I am staying at the White House just Sunday night through Thursday night. After school is over on Friday, Danielle, Matt and I will be picked up by the IC vehicle and transported back to Gulu for the weekend! And no there is no toliets, and no running water. Danielle and I are going to wash each other's hair! Let's hear it for jerry can showers!
